Birthdays need not damage the planet

A birthday gift is an annual gesture which shows friends and family that we think and care about them. It's a shame that in showing our affection for others, every year millions of gift buyers damage the planet with their choice of present. However in 2015, there are so many eco gift options that there is no excuse to contribute to global decay in the name of a loved one.

If you're buying for a child over the next few weeks, it's likely they've just recently returned to school, so any kind of stationery item might be on your mind as a gift idea. Before you buy, remember that items often made from plastic, such as rulers, notepads and even phone cases, can be made from biodegradable material, and not at an extortionate cost. Planning a dream present such as a remote control car? Even these can now be run using water power instead of batteries. Surely the best way to make a child's birthday is to give them a gift that also teaches them about the importance of sustainable living?

And it's not just kids that have all the fun. Adult-focused items, such as jewellery, can be made from planet-friendly materials such as glass, wood and even bike chains and empty bottles.

Those who regularly buy environmentally friendly products as birthday gifts often describe the feeling as twice as powerful; you're effectively doing two good deeds instead of one!

Some of the best spokespeople for eco gifts might be the famous stars we watch on TV and read about every day online. To quote fashion model Rhea Durham, who has been widely reported to be a major supporter of environmentally friendly products: "I really feel that, in this time in the world, it is important to be more aware of your surroundings and of what we can do to be as healthy and conscious of ourselves, of others and of our environment."

As we all know, it's the thought that counts. But next time we gift shop for loved ones, why not make it two thoughts? One for the gift recipient and one for the planet, which also needs some love every now and then!
